About the book

In the foreword to the lush art-book Made in Calgary: An Exploration of Art from the 1960s to the 2000s, Glenbow Museum President & CEO Donna Livingstone writes "There is a freewheeling, don't-fence-me-in character to art-making in Calgary that mirrors the city itself. Artists here draw inspiration from everything around them and have a fierce commitment to the local community."

Attempting to summarize the work of hundreds of artists who have called Calgary home is a tall task. But through the artwork documented in this book, it becomes easy to see the interconnected story of the visual arts in Calgary, and the many individuals and organizations who have contributed to its creation. i

Based on Glenbow Museum's Made in Calgary exhibition series which ran between 2013 and 2014, the book features 577 works of art by over 200 Calgary artists. The book examines five decades, the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s, and the fascinating story that is told in both words and through the art, is that of the city itself - a once small, insular prairie town that, through explosive population growth and economic development, emerged into a cosmopolitan, forward thinking centre.

A true sense of community pervades across the book, as the emerging artists of the early chapters become the instructors and mentors of subsequent generations; Made In Calgary also demonstrates how the creative vision of individuals evolves as new ideas and perspectives are continually introduced to the fertile, ever growing scene. While artists operating here were certainly aware of and incorporated ideas percolating throughout the art world at large, as a whole, the Calgary scene never slavishly married itself to any larger prevailing trends. Staying true to the embodiment of Western individuality, and, occasionally iconoclasm, the artists of this region tended to stay true only to their own singular muse.
