The African collection contains over 5000 artifacts with a focus on the cultures of West Africa. Collected in the 1960s, objects in the collection represent the range of West Africa's diverse cultures notably from the Yoruba people of Nigeria, the Akan speakers of Ghana, and the Bamum and Bamileke kingdoms of the Cameroon Grassfields.

The elephant, symbol of the Fon, is represented in this mask made of cloth, woven plants, and beadwork. This contemporary version is usually worn with a wide flat hat to support it on the head of a dancer.
