Northwest Coast

The people of the Northwest Coast rely on the sea and forests for their livelihood. Glenbow has excellent collections from the Kwakwaka'wak and Nuu-chah-nulth peoples, representing their daily activities and ceremonial art. We also have extensive collections from other areas of the coast, including Coast Salish basketry and weaving, a large collection of Haida argillite, and carvings, weavings, and utensils from the Tlingit, Tsimshian, Nisgasa, Nuxalk, and Heiltsuk.

Blanket Coat
by Robyn Sparrow, Musqueam, British Columbia
handspun sheep's wool, natural dyes, wood
AA 2134

The design of this coat is based on a traditional Salish coat documented in early photographs. Ms. Sparrow is at the forefront of the revival of Coast Salish loom weaving on the Musqueam Reserve in Vancouver, B.C. The buttons in the shape of miniature spindle whorls were carved by Jim Kew, also from Musqueam.
